CHARACTER

NAME: Okkotsu Yuuta
CANON: Jujutsu Kaisen
CANON POINT: Chapter 146; After splitting from the group to take part in the Culling Game alone.
AGE: 17 years
SPECIES: Human
INFORMATION: Here

CHARACTER PITCH: When Yuuta is first formally introduced in the prologue to Jujutsu Kaisen, it is as a “Special Grade Cursed Human.” When reintroduced much later in the main canon, it is as one of the four “Special Grade Jujutsu Sorcerers” in the world. The key difference here is that originally his character is a purely passive one: he was a human being cursed, haunted by the vengeful spirit of his dead girlfriend. Once he unravels her curse, however, he officially joins Jujutsu High as a jujutsu sorcerer at its lowest rank. Within just three months, Yuuta reclaimed the rank of “Special Grade” on his own merit — a feat described as prodigious.

This distinction and implied journey of personal growth is important in understanding Yuuta as a character. Though the protagonist of its prologue, he is a supporting character in the overall story of Jujutsu Kaisen — as the second-strongest sorcerer, he helps establish both a power boundary and a sense of scaling for the other characters. Though his part in the main comic is relatively minor, he acts as an emotional anchor and a rock that the other students can rely upon. He holds the interesting position of a character who has largely already undergone the bulk of their character development; he has emerged from a lonely and traumatic past, found his confidence and achieved his goals, and now he seeks to use his considerable power to maintain that course.

POWERS: In Jujutsu Kaisen's world, all human beings possess cursed energy — generated from negative emotions like grief, anger, regret, shame, and hate, it both gives form to the monstrous cursed spirits which prey, unseen, upon mankind and is also utilized by jujutsu sorcerers to combat said spirits. Typically, jujutsu sorcerer candidates possess cursed energy of a certain elevated threshold which allows them to see cursed spirits and use jujutsu; this is typically done by way of “cursed techniques,” which channel cursed energy into a specific function. Techniques are most often innate and intrinsic or inherited from a family line, though there are some universal abilities all sorcerers share or are capable of learning.
1️⃣ Immense Cursed Energy: As a distant descendant of Sugawara no Michizane, Yuuta possesses an immense personal reservoir of cursed energy which is unsurpassed by all other jujutsu sorcerers. Though he can also manipulate this resource in a prodigious way, he is not particularly efficient in doing so. If he runs out of cursed energy, he is essentially “normal” until his energy naturally replenishes (typically by resting for a day or two).
2️⃣ Cursed Energy Reinforcement: Yuuta is physically frail. He circumvents this vulnerability by reinforcing his body with a circuitous flow of cursed energy. Maintaining this constant flow increases his strength, speed, and reflexes (as a benchmark, he's able to throw a car ten or twenty yards). It also makes him more resilient to physical damage (to continue the aforementioned benchmark, he was able to handle having a car thrown directly at him). The second half of Yuuta's application of cursed energy reinforcement is that he can channel it through his katana (or any other weapon), turning an otherwise normal blade into a durable, powerful weapon. Imbuing an object in this way with either too much cursed energy or too suddenly, however, will overload and shatter it.
3️⃣ Cursed Energy Output: The ability to imbue attacks with waves or blasts of pure cursed energy, such as a swing of his katana unleashing a powerful shockwave. Yuuta’s output for cursed energy in an attack like this is high but not unmatched. He does have the more unique ability to release similar blasts of reverse cursed energy, though it should be stated that this would only be damaging to cursed spirits and not mortal opponents.
4️⃣ Reverse Cursed Energy Technique: A technical and complex manner of cursed energy manipulation, this boils down to multiplying the “negative” of two instances of cursed energy together to create a “positive.” This process generates a positive form of “reverse cursed energy” which can be used to heal Yuuta’s or others’ wounds. Though powerful, it is not instantaneous or perfect when used on mortal bodies. It can be used to stabilize grievous wounds and drastically speed up the body's healing process, but the wounded individual would still have to spend time recuperating. This technique is taxing to use and consumes more cursed energy than other techniques. Like any other technique, it is contingent upon Yuuta’s personal reserve of cursed energy.
5️⃣ Curtain: A jujutsu barrier technique which all sorcerers have access to. By using an invocation, a dark “curtain” can be lowered as a dome over a given physical location, cutting it off visually and by way of communications. The sorcerer can impose limitations on who can exit and enter this space upon creating the curtain. By the jujutsu law of Binding Vows, the more specific the limitation is, the more difficult it is to break. For example: a curtain which prevents all entry and exit would be significantly easier to break through with concerted effort on either side than a curtain which allowed entry but prevented exit.
6️⃣ Rika: Yuuta’s innate technique involves partially manifesting a cursed apparition named “Rika;” this involves her hands, arms, and/or head reaching through temporary voids in space. Though this entity was once inhabited by the soul of the deceased Orimoto Rika, he unraveled the curse binding her to him over a year ago. Upon passing on, however, Rika left behind a piece of her will in the apparition; it continues to speak with her voice and acts upon instincts of devotion and protection towards him. Though she will follow Yuuta’s direct commands, she can act independently to protect him — she can also act on her own accord separately from him, such as to safeguard the lives of civilians in a nearby building as Yuuta fights outside. Rika has her own supply of cursed energy, and she is powerful in her own right. She and Yuuta work in tandem while fighting, assailing opponents with attacks from two fronts. Rika is not invulnerable, and if she sustains enough damage, she will dissipate until her own cursed energy has replenished.

The full manifestation of Rika and Yuuta’s other Innate Technique, “Copy,” are sealed behind a Binding Vow connected to the ring that Rika gave Yuuta on his tenth birthday. As they are currently not applicable without the ring, they will be omitted from this application, though upon obtaining it as an extraordinary regain, the powers thereby received and their limitations will be detailed in full. I am also omitting Yuuta’s Domain Expansion from this application, as its mechanics have not yet been revealed and I would not have him use it without that information. If/When that information is revealed in the source material, I will approach the moderation team regarding its viability for use in the game.

Note on Power Limitations: I believe all of Yuuta’s abilities fall within the guidelines on power limitations. Healing by way of reverse cursed energy application is not instantaneous and still will require rest and recuperation; it is also very taxing on Yuuta to use extensively. Though he can exhibit superhuman strength, speed, and agility, these are all contingent on his resource and are far better suited to short-term battles and sprints. Please let me know if you want to impose any further limitations on these abilities, however!

QUESTIONNAIRE

What is the worst or most malicious thing your character has ever done? How do they feel about it now? Was this sort of action typical of them?
After watching his childhood best friend (and sort-of-kind-of fiancé) die traumatically in a traffic accident right in front of his eyes, Yuuta could not bring himself to accept her loss. Thinking that he had to save her and internally commanding her not to die, he unwittingly cursed her mortal soul to him, binding them together as a monstrous cursed spirit and the human being that she haunted.

Though Yuuta didn’t curse Rika intentionally, it still caused irreparable harm on those around him and his relationships to them. He could never anticipate when her curse might activate, and since she reacted violently to both protective and possessive instincts, anyone nearby was at risk for potential maiming or death. Over a six year period he had to estrange himself from his family, all other classmates, and anyone else he might come across in the world, and even then he injured (and potentially even killed) an uncertain number of people during that time. At heart, Yuuta is a deeply empathetic and well-meaning boy. Upon learning that it was he that cursed Rika and not the other way around, he accepted the blame (and the guilt that came with it) immediately, shedding tears for both Rika, who had spent all that time as a monster, and the people that they had both unintentionally harmed. Yuuta has done much to move past this chapter in his life, accepting it with a very mature melancholy and humility, but it has taught him a valuable lesson: because of his bloodline, he holds great power, and he must be very cautious in how he channels his emotions so he doesn’t unintentionally use it for ill.

What is the most altruistic or selfless thing your character has ever done? How do they feel about it now? Was this sort of action typical of them?
Yuuta always prioritizes protecting those that need protecting and stabilizing those that need healing before turning his full attention to a fight. He is also by nature self-sacrificing. During his climactic final battle with Getou Suguru in his first year at Jujutsu High, he found himself at the end of his rope — with his classmates and friends incapacitated and with his enemy mustering his ultimate ability to kill him once and for all, he turns to Rika and promises her something in return for her full power: “My future, my heart, my body. They’re all yours. We’ll be together forever.” This promise, a profession of love, and a kiss are enough to give Rika enough power to completely overwhelm Getou’s final assault. Though in the end Yuuta ends up unraveling Rika’s curse and allowing her to pass on peacefully (without taking him with her), he had been fully ready to follow through on his promise, even though he was sad to leave his newfound friends behind. This mortal sacrifice is likely something that his friends even tease him for at this point, using it as ammunition to poke fun at his self-sacrificing spirit, but it’s a trade that Yuuta would almost certainly make again if presented the option. He values his life the most when it is being used for the benefit of those he cares about.

What do they desire above all else? How far would they go to accomplish their goals or fulfill those desires? Do they have lines they wouldn't cross?
When asked by his future teacher, Gojou Satoru, to come to Jujutsu High, Yuuta initially refuses. Six years of being haunted by Rika’s curse had driven him into a life of self-imposed isolation. He was deeply depressed (to the point of attempting suicide, though Rika hadn’t allowed it), and he wasn’t willing to throw himself into a new social situation where he might continue to pose an unwilling threat to those around him. Gojou ends up convincing him by correctly calling out how lonely he is, and by saying that Rika’s curse could potentially used for good, if taught to control it correctly.

Yuuta plainly spells out his most heartfelt desires when asked for them by his classmate Maki: “I want to be with people. I want to be relied on by somebody! I want to believe… that it’s okay to keep living.” Fortunately enough for Yuuta, by the time he’s in his second year at Jujutsu High, he’s tentatively achieved his goals. He has surrounded himself with a new family of close friends who rely quite a bit on his considerable strength, and in them he’s found his reason to keep living. Though Yuuta may be a well-meaning young man, he will go considerably far in the service of his friends and allies. To fulfill a later promise to Gojou, he actually “kills” Itadori Yuuji (in order to satisfy a Binding Vow to do so) before instantaneously resuscitating his damaged heart with reverse cursed energy to bring him back to life. In the current Culling Game arc, he is shown not to hesitate in killing other dangerous jujutsu sorcerers in order to achieve his goals. Perhaps the only line he might not be able to cross would be if he were forced to oppose one of his beloved friends, if it ever came to such a thing…

GAME DETAILS

LEGACY: The Lover
Though I did try to entertain the thought of a handful of other Legacies, based on Yuuta’s personality and overall character arc, the Lover is by far the most apt for him. He embodies both its strengths and its shortcomings as well. Not only is the crux of his initial character concept “the young man who’s cursed by Rika, the girl who loves him,” but all of his major character goals and motivations are centered around his relationships with other people. In the Culling Game, when fighting enemy jujutsu sorcerers, brought back from the dead to fight for a second chance at life, he seems unimpressed by answers like “I was unfulfilled in my first life.” Yuuta demands whether or not they had friends, family, lovers, anyone to give them a reason to fight — to him, living purely for oneself is not only selfish but unthinkable. This does feed into his aforementioned self-sacrificial nature, however, and even as he integrates into the game, he will suffer with aimlessness until he inevitably finds new friends to bond intensely to. But once he does surround himself with a new network of friends and comrades, he will be willing to fight to the end for them.
INTRODUCTORY SECT: Pleroma
SUITABILITY: I would be remiss if I didn’t say that I’m enjoying my time so much with the game that I want to be able to experience both sides of it! For Yuuta specifically, however, he embodies a very helpful polar opposite of my other current character to bounce between. I believe he will strongly identify with the struggle of the Pleroma against the Kenoma, and I don’t anticipate him switching sides. One thing I am exploring, however, is how his empathetic nature will interfere with what he feels he is called to do. Though he will do almost anything to protect those he cares for, this isn’t something he can control and silo off to his own faction; the more compassion he feels for those that he fights against, the more complicated his own situation will become. I’m interested in exploring that dynamic and in general pursue an altogether different vibe than what I am going for with my other character!
