[ this is the first time Johnny has really tried this Communion thing - starting it himself and trying to contact someone specifically instead of just replying to an open message. Sitting here talking to a rock makes him feel kind of crazy, but when he thinks about it, it probably isn't even ranking in the top 10 of weirdest thing he's done, so he gets over it quickly enough. ]
( though yuuta has tested out this whole "Communion" thing once or twice, he had mostly only listened in to the discussions that were being had and still remained in the shared mental space before they slowly began to dissipate. he hasn't contributed all that much himself yet, still feeling very much like a clueless newcomer to a very precarious and complex situation โ though he's gaining more understanding and confidence by the day.
johnny's message is the first time anyone's contacted him directly. the odd nagging feeling that someone's trying to get a hold of him is bizarre and more than a little bit anxiety-inducing for a moment, but once he figures out it's coming from his shard and has to do with Communion, he calms down quite a bit so he can answer. )
Oh! Hi, Johnny. It's nice to hear from you! Have you been doing alright since I saw you last?
( considering everything that had happened in venera... he's more than a little bit concerned, even if he seemed to have avoided the worst of it himself. )
[ his dry tone heavily suggests exactly the opposite, but he doesn't elaborate. Yuuta was probably in Venera, too; he can guess what happened. For now, Johnny's just relieved this weird little magic spell actually worked. Phones exist back home, but only barely - they're for the wealthy and powerful only, and while the Joestars were well-off, they weren't that well-off. This is an entirely new experience, speaking to someone remotely, and he can't help his mild sense of wonder, all his sarcasm aside. ]
I can't believe this actually worked. [ a pause; on the other end, he's shaking his head faintly, then continuing. ] Hey, where are you right now - Greentruth? Are you busy? I wanted to talk to you again.
Haha... Yeah, that's about as much as can be expected, huh...?
( it's kind of shameful, isn't it? he doesn't know about johnny or anyone else, but he'd gone into venera to see what was going on and to try to help the people there. before he'd gotten anything like that done, he'd ended up so lost in the delusions of his own mind that he hadn't been able to do much of anything. fortunately, he doesn't think he hurt all that many people in the process but... yuuta's the type to think that inaction is in and of itself harm, especially given what he can do normally, so...
yeah. he gets it.
right now he's sitting about six or seven stories up in one of the massive trees on the outskirts of greentruth, watching a column of dinosaurs slowly make their way through the undergrowth far below. but... that's close enough. ) Um, yeah, I'm near Greentruth. ( a smile is spreading across his face. ) Not busy, though! So let's meet up. I can be over there in a little bit... Is there a place you'd like to meet up?
[ same hat, yuuta. let us not speak of this failure........
Johnny doesn't miss that Yuuta sounds oddly... happy? to receive this "call," if it can be called that, but he doesn't comment on that. Maybe he wasn't just taking pity on Johnny, after all. ]
I'm at the south end of the market - the main one. I don't think you'll have a hard time spotting me.
[ they can figure out where to go after that; he'd like to avoid rolling over as many rickety rope bridges as possible. It still stresses him out every time. ]
( yuuta isn't terribly complicated when the situation doesn't call for it. as far as he's concerned, johnny is his friend. they'd both been thrown into this situation at the same time, and even if his tone and his tongue were harsher than some might normally call "amicable," he feels like they'd helped one another get their bearings once they'd finally made their way into godsblood. if anything, talking to johnny now is making him realize that maybe he's been neglecting reaching out to the guy more since he'd been shown the portal to greentruth. he's spent a lot of time here, seeing what he can see and trying to wrap his head around the "resistance" that exists in this place.
well... he doesn't want to just dwell on feeling remiss about something that's already passed. this is a great opportunity to turn that around. )
Okay! I'll be there in a few.
( and, true enough, he is there in a little over five minutes, having raced across the treetops and back into greentruth (perhaps with an assist here and there from rika). after scanning the area of the markets that johnny had mentioned, he does find the other young man (assuming he's in his wheelchair? yes that does tend to stand out, especially in greentruth) and comes jogging up to him, a gentle and somewhat sheepish smile on his face. )
Johnny! Sorry to keep you waiting. ( it really hadn't been that long, but, still. ) What's up?
[ meanwhile, Johnny is too complicated for his own good, and has a terrible tendency to complicate other things the longer he thinks about them; if he contemplates Yuuta's behavior, he'll sooner or later come up with a convoluted explanation for why Yuuta's being so nice and how it has nothing to do with him, which is exactly why he's just ignoring it for now. These past few months have taught him that trusting people a little bit can pay off on occasion (regardless of his suspicions that it's all going to come back to bite him in the ass sooner or later - for the present, he's allowing himself to try and believe.)
he is indeed in his wheelchair, which is exactly why he said he'd stand out; in terms of appearance, he's not quite as bold as he used to be, having no choice but to wear the local fashions. Compared to their first handful of days together, Johnny seems a little more confident. Which is, as it so happens, what he called Yuuta here for. ]
Hey. [ a small wave. ] It's nothing urgent... At least, I don't think it's gonna be. I want to show you something. In private, though. C'mon.
[ his words might be ominous, but his tone isn't particularly; he beckons Yuuta to come with him, maneuvering the chair around to head towards a slightly more secluded corner of the area. ]
( given the circumstances, yuuta would prefer to open doors in good will rather than prematurely close them out of caution. he doesn't really feel like they have a lot of other options. godsblood is one thing, but after what had happened in venera, he understood now more than ever what they were up against: most of this continent was under the empire's stranglehold, and the Aions that opposed them weren't above using those resources to their advantage. if they couldn't at least try to trust and see the best in those at their side... what hope did they even have?
so he tries his best. it's not that he is without his doubts and misgivings, but he always has to try to put them into perspective. fortunately enough for johnny, just being a little sharp-tongued isn't enough to raise many flags for him โ he had, after all, been a classmate of zen'in maki. compared to her, he's downright pleasant.
he is happy to see johnny looking a little less out-of-sorts, and that shines through his greeting with a small amount of relief. ) Oh? Alright. ( he's more than a bit curious now... ) Lead the way.
( he follows, dark blue eyes scanning their surroundings as they get away from the main crowd. he doesn't really think anyone is close enough to eavesdrop on them, but just to be safe, he instructs rika to keep an eye out for them as well. )
Something you wanna show me, huh? What is it? ( he's inspecting johnny like a kid trying to find a birthday present hidden in a pocket. )
[ Yuuta seems to be in good spirits... that's not surprising. Johnny's impression of him is someone both easygoing and easy but too easy to push around (otherwise he'd be with the Kenoma thanks to their weird goo, he assumes), which would make him an asset for a group of anxious rebels down on their luck. He's probably fitting in just fine. The super strength (or super stamina, anyway) probably doesn't hurt, either.
Speaking of that super-strength... Once they've pulled away from the group, Johnny shoots a cursory look around before his eyes land on Yuuta once more - at which point he puffs out a voiceless maybe-laugh at his clear intrigue. ]
Sorry, but it's not a gift or anything. [ it may, in fact, be something he really doesn't like. At this point, he doesn't think this is any kind of setup by the president; it's too complicated. In fact, he doesn't think any of this is related to what was going on back home. No: this is more about confirming his suspicions than anything else. And while Johnny doesn't anticipate this turning into a fight, that doesn't mean he's not ready for one. Stand users are drawn to one another, he's found, and it's rarely to work together.
So, after a pause, he looks up at Yuuta a little more seriously. ] ... You're a Stand user, aren't you? The "power" you had on the day we met... it wasn't something a regular person would be capable of.
[ with that, at once, an array of stars light up on Johnny's arms, glowing slightly blue, and a strange being fades into existence next to him - a pink, robot-like spirit that stands about as tall as his chair, looking up at Yuuta along with him. ]
Edited (FORGOT THE MOST IMPORTANT PART) 2022-06-14 05:24 (UTC)
( he's been fitting in as best he can! he was maybe one of the more unobtrusive Aions to have around, so he's been learning what he can and doing whatever he can to help out the efforts at greentruth. he does on occasion drop into godsblood as well, either finding odd jobs to make some money and buy some supplies or just to get a sense of how things are going on the "other side" (so to speak). at the moment it all feels a bit... aimless. but yuuta is used to belonging to an organization like the jujutsu administration, one which kept a fastidious and perhaps too stringent hold on its sorcerers, so... it's just something to adjust to.
he tries not to look disappointed at johnny's admission, but it shows through just a little bit. ) Ah... Okay.
( he straightens back up, sheepish up until the other young man continues. then his expression just contorts into pure confusion. at first he doesn't really pick out the Proper Noun and just figures... well, he is standing up right now... johnny is sitting down... does this mean anything?? no, he doesn't think that's it, especially given the more he thinks about it, the more it seems like he used that word with too much importance for something like that. especially if it has something to do with his cursed energy reinforcement โ
but then the stars light up along johnny's arms, and a completely bizarre-looking pink robot-y looking thing appears behind him, and yuuta's eyes widen to perfect circles. his mouth falls slack, but before he can say anything, there's a distinct shift in the air around them. something so inexplicable (and perceivably powerful) appearing so suddenly triggered rika's defensive instincts; she's very nearly about to manifest, giving the profound feeling in the immediate area of something wrong, something creepy and distinctly malevolent.
something which yuuta addresses with alacrity, but also... with a gentle note of care in his voice: ) Rika, please. It's alright.
( the presence dulls, but it doesn't completely disappear.
yuuta's disposition has changed a bit too. gone is the blithe mien of a teenager, instead replaced by the whispered severity of one of the only four sorcerers in the world to be given a "special grade" rank. there's nothing aggressive in it, but he is distinctly serious, having picked up on the timbre of johnny's words. ) I've never heard that term before... "Stand user," right? I want to say "no," but - I don't know, maybe they have different words for it in other places...? Regardless... what I am is a jujutsu sorcerer, and that power you've seen me use is a cursed technique called reinforcement.
I'm guessing... you wouldn't call that a "cursed technique." ( he points at tusk. )
i forgot a word in my last tag and now it's gonna haunt me...... *NOT too easy
[ he feels that shift in the air, too, and it's plain to see in his own reaction - his expression hardens, and Tusk steps forward almost protectively. He hasn't encountered a Stand that has such bad vibes, specifically, and it's hard to believe that Yuuta would control such a thing, but maybe he had the wrong read of him. For a moment, he's ready to actually fight.
But then Yuuta seems to calm that weird energy (is he talking to it...?) and talks to him normally again, relatively. Johnny's surprised that he feels relieved. After all that's happened, he's still soft. With a quiet sigh, he sits back in his chair again, letting his shoulders relax. ]
I knew it, [ he mumbles; then, he shakes his head. ] No... this is called a "Stand." I don't really understand it all, either, but it's a sort of "power" that comes from the human soul... People who have it are drawn to one another. That's why I had a feeling you were like me.
[ or something like him, at least. He's never heard of a "jujutsu sorcerer," but it's also obvious that Yuuta is from the other side of the world. It makes sense that the phenomenon might have a different name there. ]
All the other Stand users I've met so far have tried to kill me. But... I'm guessing you're not going to do that. So I wanted to talk to you instead.
( for a split second, it really does seem like it will come to a fight โ regardless of what he tells her, if either johnny or tusk actually made a move to attack yuuta, rika would appear to intercede. in order to deter that possibility, he raises both hands, palms facing out, in a sign of surrender. this, combined with the ebbing of rika's irritation and the loosening up of the tension in johnny's shoulders as he leans back in his chair, seems to have disarmed the potential violence of the moment. yuuta exhales a sigh of relief, dropping his hands back to his sides. )
O - Oh. I see. ( kind of a weird thing to call something like that, but... it's at least a bit easier to say than the terminology that sorcerers usually use? when he'd first gone to jujutsu tech, rika's full classification had been "special grade vengeful cursed spirit orimoto rika"...
he makes an obvious start as johnny continues. )What? No, of course not! I mean, not unless you gave me a good reason, but, um...
( he rocks back onto the heel of one foot, putting one hand up to his chin. it's not that johnny's explanation makes sense, but he has to think that this is maybe something a bit different from a cursed technique. for one, he doesn't really get that Vibe from it (in the dulled sort of way that yuuta senses cursed energy, as thrown out of whack as his "radar" is by rika's presence alone), but for another... rika is fairly unique as far as cursed techniques go. there are other sorcerers that summon creatures, sure, but they are shikigami โ they are brought into the world by way of a medium, be it a paper talisman, a lock of hair, or a shadow. rika's curse had been stabilized by her ring, but even separate from it, the cursed apparition remains. it's a part of his inherent technique: a shikigami-esque entity that needed no medium, perhaps because the piece of rika's will left behind in it gave it enough to exist on its own right. )
The way it was explained to me... Jujutsu sorcerers use their personal cursed energy to fuel "cursed techniques," which are usually powers that are used in combat. Not all of them summon something like that, though... Mine is actually considered pretty strange by most.
( it was an outlier, inexplicable. his teacher's strength went beyond the calculable limits given to them by those who came before, but that's because he combined two very powerful inheritable techniques that had never been used in combination before. so unlike gojou's limitless technique or megumi's ten shadows, yuuta's was so surprising and strange that it kept even his teachers guessing. )
I guess I can show you, though. Just - don't freak out! As long as we're just talking, she's not going to attack if I don't tell her to. ( his eyes flicker upwards, and he continues, ) Rika, could you โ
( he's actually interrupted by a dark rift opening up in the air behind him; the large, pale head of the cursed apparition appears from it and leans forward to rest her chin on his right shoulder. he jumps, but then chuckles, reaching up to pat the side of her head. despite having no eyes, the creature's gaze seems to bore into johnny and tusk with aggressive intensity. )
[ at Yuuta's obvious shock, Johnny can't help but offer half a smile. As threatening as the pressure he exudes is, his demeanor is completely different; for all his aforementioned experience with other Stand users trying to kill him, Johnny finds himself believing quite wholeheartedly that Yuuta truly won't. Besides, you can't help what kind of Stand you have - or "cursed energy," as he puts it. ]
Yeah, it sounds like the same thing. Stands aren't always a - summon, like you said. [ Diego's, for example, was more of an innate power, and Hot Pants' was a pair of canister weapons... so he gets what Yuuta's saying, he thinks. ] Sounds like it's way more of an art where you're from.
[ from his perspective, it's another sign of Yuuta's good intentions that he's about to summon his own in front of Johnny - a measure of trust is required for that, at least in his experience - so as he speaks, he watches carefully, unconcerned even with the warning. Once he sees Rika, he gets where it was coming from. It's not enough to perturb him at this point; that said, it's definitely among the less charismatic Stands he's seen, and he squints at her, faintly judgmental. ]
... You got stuck with an ugly one, huh?
[ that's his GIRLFRIEND JOHNNY!! He gestures mildly with one hand, as if dismissing any possible aggression that might be inferred by his rudeness. ]
Mine's called Tusk. [ the spirit, which has been silent thus far, speaks unexpectedly, emitting a squeaky chumimi! in a voice that's vaguely reminiscent of Johnny's if he inhaled some helium; he ignores this noise entirely, continuing. ] So... I guess this makes us allies.
( they could very well be from the same or a similar world, though if johnny didn't know anything about cursed spirits, it was likely a different one. sorcerers using cursed energy to combat them and protect the common man from preying upon them was their primary function, after all. might be worth asking later... )
An "art"... I suppose so. It's something I technically go to school for, though it's pretty rare for a person to have the potential to become a jujutsu sorcerer. ( that makes both the school in tokyo and the one in kyoto scout pretty aggressively for those with that potential (though, in recent years, they'd very nearly put two of those individuals to death rather than teach them). ) My class only had three other people in it, besides me.
( and if johnny met or knows inumaki toge, he officially knows fifty percent of yuuta's class!
both yuuta and rika react at johnny's offhanded judgment; yuuta goes rigid, and then he tries to diffuse his own tension by laughing, though its obvious enough that it's a forced and nervous sort of sound. rika, on the other hand, becomes visibly angry. a flinch, an anime popping vein symbol, and a low, aggravated growl (which, weirdly enough, sounds like that of a young girl despite some aural fluctuation). she even starts to lean further out of her rift in space before yuuta lifts a hand to her face to hold her back. she relents, for now. )
Hi, Tusk. ( yuuta gives a small wave, and rika, seemingly fit to ignore the strange, pink spirit, forces a huge hand through another rift nearby to threateningly point a dark, cracked fingernail at johnny before disappearing entirely. yuuta sighs, his shoulders slumping; in addition to the mental toll mediating interactions with her can be, it's also a drain on his cursed energy to keep her manifested for too long without her ring to stabilize it. )
That's silly. ( he addresses johnny's last statement with a bright smile. ) We were already allies, Johnny. We're friends, aren't we? But I'm happy you told me about this. ( especially since... it seemed like it meant something to him? it's less of a ritual for sorcerers to tell one another about their abilities. actually, by the law of binding vows, revealing one's hand actually makes their techniques stronger... ) Both Rika and I will help you out however we can. Though - ( and here he places his hands together in front of him, an image of pleading. ) - please don't be too rude to her. There's only so much I can do to calm her down...
[ he's never seen one so... expressive? johnny hasn't had the fortune(?) to interact with any fully-sentient Stands, so he's a bit shocked by how she visibly reacts to what he says, even when Yuuta doesn't. Is this a reflection of his inner feelings, then...? Considering that awkward laugh, too - maybe he shouldn't have said that. The quiet ones can be the ones to watch out for, they say. His eyes widen a fraction, and that hand-waving becomes slightly more urgent. ]
Uh -- sorry. I didn't think she was, uh, listening...? [ phrased in such a way that makes it clear he's still not sure if that's what happened. ] Mine looks like a fuckin' joke, so you're doing pretty good, actually!
[ this probably isn't helping, but Johnny isn't known for his social finesse... alas. (True to form, Tusk doesn't seem insulted at being called a joke - clearly, it doesn't have nearly as much independence as Rika does.) Fortunately, she doesn't leave him time to make it worse; her offended exit leaves him with only Yuuta's words to contemplate, instead, as Tusk follows suit soon after, gradually fading away into the background once more.
Friends? Already...? Here, when Johnny's got nothing to offer at all? Hard to believe, especially from a guy who he's only really taken advantage of. But, again, what choice does he have but to believe? ]
... You're a big softie, aren't you, Yuuta? [ scary Stand and all. a little smile. ] All right... we're friends, then. You said it.
( oh, she would've been much more expressive if the real rika was still in there โ she probably would have tried to grab him in one of her huge hands and shake him until he showed proper respect. yuuta still isn't really sure if the behavior that this version of rika displays is either informed by whatever piece of herself she left behind in it or by his memories of her and what he thinks she might have done in that situation. it could be a little bit of both? regardless, it's not as though he really takes offense? he's aware that rika's form... well, when she was actually in there and as it is now, it's always been frightening-looking and monstrous. it had taken him a while to stop being terrified of it himself. and his classmates had basically attacked him on sight just because they sensed she was with him, when he'd first met them... )
No, it's alright! She is always, um... around me, if that makes sense? Is Tusk not hanging around you when he's not summoned...?
( and... it seems as though yuuta won't stand for johnny putting his own Stand down either...! ) Don't say that! I think he's super cool! He's like some sort of robot...? ( kind of reminds him of that student from the kyoto branch that pilots the mecha suit...
oh, johnny... friendship isn't about what you can offer the other person! he guesses he can kind of understand where he's coming from, but after being a shounen protagonist for a little over a year... declaring something like this is easy enough to do, especially when they're meant to be allies fighting in this whole... war for the universe thing.
he smiles sheepishly, scratching at the back of his neck. ) Yeah... I guess I've heard that before. ( he's a soft-hearted guy... until he isn't. but that's only when he needs to be. ) Okay. Good! We've gotta stick together, after all... It's only making all of this tougher for us, if we don't.
[ the word "robot" prompts a wrinkled brow and a vague, quizzical tilt of his head, but he doesn't pursue, if only because it doesn't matter. He's been introduced to so many terms he doesn't recognize these past few weeks - he's trying to stop asking so many questions lest people start thinking he's some kind of idiot. Tusk looks kind of like a toy to him, if he had to compare it to anything, so Johnny decides that a robot must be something like that... he'll do some research later... ]
Yeah, I guess. [ he doesn't really know who to trust or how much the Pleroma can actually help him - he's never been much of a team player. But he does feel like he can trust Yuuta, at least. ] Don't get too nice and let people take advantage of you. We might all be on the same side, but we still barely know anything about anyone. Especially "Pleroma."
[ a beat. ]
... Although it looks like your "Rika" would beat up anyone who tried anything.
[ she seemed like she'd been ready to beat up Johnny a second ago, after all. ]
yuuta seems to accept johnny's advice, but he does so with obvious conflict written on his face. it's not that he's unaware of situations like these. he had been a ready tool of the jujustu society, both because it was expected as him as a student of their school but also because, as special grade, it meant there were things only someone like he could do. but as his teacher had told him, its higher-ups were overly conservative and reactionary โ the same old men that would've had him executed due to the curse that he bore a little over a year ago now ironically relied on him to carry out their judgments. gojou, as uncontrollable as he was due to his power, had been a rogue element to them, and he had passed that nature and that wariness on to his student. don't always trust those in power, especially those that have had it for a long time. they will rarely do what is in your best interest.
it feels different, somehow. it's not as though the sorcerers' struggle against curse users and cursed spirits wasn't important โ at the time that he'd been taken from his world, it had reached a point where it might result in a global extermination of all mundane, non-sorcerer people. they fought for similarly dire reasons here, but... they had so little information, so few resources, such scant direction. it makes him want to trust who they do have, but...
johnny is right. doing so would just open them up to risk. )
...Mm. ( he hadn't commented himself, but he had read dextera's Communion discussion on his doubts about the Pleroma. he understands. it's so hard to trust something you can't see, can't speak to, can't reason with, but... if they can't trust it, or what it stands for, then what's the point? ) You're right. I know. It's just - even if we don't trust in it, or in the resistance, or anything else... we at the very least need to try to trust one another. Us Aions allied under it. With what we're up against... We just won't have any chance unless we do at least that.
( his companion's comment about rika breaks through his sudden severity. his expression changes, growing warm and worn around the edges; an affection that has existed for so long that it has formed an impression in his expression, and one he falls into quickly at the sound of her name. ) Yeah. She hasn't let much happen to me in the last ten years, so - don't worry about me. I've always got someone watching my back.
[ he's still not really used to people who aren't Gyro taking him seriously; he looks a little surprised when Yuuta responds to his off-handed cynical comment with a thoughtful, earnest answer, having said it with the expectation that it would be brushed off. It's been a while. Johnny scratches his head, somewhat awkward, as he formulates a reply. ]
Yeah, well... I might be right, but you're not wrong, either. [ a small sigh, and he shakes his head briefly, dismissive. ] I'm just used to shit going belly-up when we get too cozy. Don't worry about it.
[ he's not too proud to admit that it colors how he sees things - he's well aware of it. Unfortunately, being aware of it doesn't mean he's been able to stop feeling like disaster's always right around the corner. But he knows it's in his head - or, at the very least, that not everybody has a disaster waiting. Besides, if nothing else, Yuuta's right that they don't have a chance alone.
He'd rather talk about Rika than what the right thing to do in their situation is. At least that topic has some concrete answers and isn't an existential threat. ]
You've had her for ten years? Damn... I've only had Tusk for a few months. [ he's not sure what to make of that really gentle expression on Yuuta's face...? one would think they were talking about his wife and not his Stand. Or, not Stand - what did he call it? ] You must be a really good "juju sorcerer," then.
( yuuta smiles another one of those smiles, soft, somewhat sad, and worn around the edges. )
I understand. I think you're right to be cautious. It's just that... I want to feel like I can trust you and the others. All of this - will become much worse, if that isn't the case.
( considering the fact that they have more than one reason to even suspect the very force that they were supposedly meant to represent... this is the baseline of what yuuta wants. he's out of his depth, fighting for some sort of spiritual ideal. but if he can picture in his mind's eye people that he has at his side and at his back, that he cares for and that he likes to think care for him... he'll be able to do just about anything. he just needs that much.
because they've all got disaster on the horizon, no matter what. there's only two boons that they have for that: the fact that they know it's coming, and the fact that they can work together to prepare for it.
he has to laugh. "juju sorcerer"... yeah, he tried his best. ) That's what I'm told. ( yuuta's humility prevents him from agreeing too readily, though he would at least admit that he's one of only four sorcerers that share his rank. his smile spreads, though it's the sort that does so more out of awkwardness than anything else. he chuckles, nervous. ) "Had her"... That's not really how I would put it. I mean, she was a cursed spirit for six or so of those, but I've known her since I was six... ( the plot thickens. )
[ yuuta, too nice to correct his incorrect attempt... he'll embarrass himself later with this
his nerves are apparent, and Johnny doesn't really grasp why, outside of plain old humility. The explanation doesn't clear up the reason, either. In fact, it only makes Johnny more confused. His brows pinch together. ]
Wait... what do you mean, she was a cursed spirit for six? You mean she was "something else" before she was a Stand...?
[ the idea of him developing a Stand naturally isn't totally outside of the question - Johnny hasn't met anyone like that, but that has to be how the Saint's powers appeared originally, right? - but the idea of someone or something turning into one is. Maybe they're not as similar as he thought, after all. ]
( alas, the poison is always in the tail for his overly polite nature.
but when it comes to this particular topic, he's a little more particular about the details, just because of how close they are to his heart. while it seems there are many similarities between what "Stands" are and what rika is... johnny's confusion here gives yuuta the impression that they definitely aren't the same thing. because, as a cursed spirit, rika hadn't been unique โ there have always been vengeful cursed spirits throughout japanese history, those whose grudges had caused them to persist after their mortal deaths, with yuuta's (very distant, very vague) ancestor being one of the most well-known.
he blinks, tilts his head a degree or two to one side, and replies slowly, ) Well, yeah... Before that, she was just my friend. ( okay, that description is a little toothless. yuuta isn't a coward. ) She was - the girl I was going to marry one day.
One: Rika definitely isn't a Stand. Or, at least, probably isn't. The nature of how Stands come into being isn't clear to him, but he strongly doubts Rika was any kind of saint whose body somehow gave Yuuta power after her passing. In other words, she's some sort of for-real ghost, which makes Yuuta some sort of for-real necromancer, in Johnny's eyes. It's fortunate that he's not particularly religious, despite going to church through his youth like a good southern boy, or this would be terrifying.
Two: He totally just called Yuuta's girlfriend ugly to his face, didn't he...?
Johnny blinks a few times and tries not to look completely taken aback by this information. ]
S-seriously? She's your fiancee?
[ should he feel sorry for Yuuta?! He doesn't know how he should be feeling!! (Except guilty for calling her ugly. He is feeling that.) ]
Edited (*picks up my dropped parenthesis*) 2022-07-22 03:43 (UTC)
( well, johnny, she had not looked like that when they were kids, so he's not that offended? there had been plenty of years that he had coexisted with rika and the curse tangled between them, especially those in the beginning, that he had also been terrified of her. when it became apparent that she was more of a danger to everything around him, he then transitioned into being terrified of what she was capable of doing to others.
sometimes it hurts him to think about, but he had known her longer as a cursed spirit than he had as a human being. in all that time, he had stopped finding her frightening and monstrous as he had in the beginning. regardless of how she looked or how viciously she acted, it had always been in defense of him, out of her protective love for him. he'd loved her too, despite it all or perhaps because of it. sometimes he had selfish moments where he wishes they could have had more time like that together, but โ no. it had been right to undo her curse as soon as he realized he was the one that had put it on her in the first place.
he hadn't told johnny this wanting to shame him, or tell him off, or make him feel bad. at first he speaks on embarrassed reflex, scratching at the back of his head, )Fiancee... That makes it sound so formal... ( he has to take a moment to consider how to continue, and when he does, his voice is measured and gentle. )
She was, yeah. After she died, I - unknowingly cursed her, preventing her soul from passing on and keeping it close to me instead. But a year ago, I'd realized what I'd done, and I released her from that curse. She's... gone now. But, um - ah, I know it's a sad story, but it's okay. ( he smiles faintly. ) I got more time with her than I would have otherwise.
The "Rika" I just showed you now ... It looks a little bit like how she used to look, and it sounds like her, but I realized pretty quickly she's not really "in" there anymore. She... can't talk to me, the way she used to. I'm not really sure why I can still summon it, but - maybe it's something like something she left behind to watch after me.
( he shrugs. he isn't sure, and it's a perfect mystery to the other sorcerers at the jujutsu society as well. )
[ Johnny's a very guarded person, generally; Yuuta sharing something that must be so intimate is, once again, unexpected. Definitely not something he'd be doing, were their positions switched. Not that he could even explain Tusk if he wanted to. If he told Yuuta that he absorbed Jesus Christ's mummified arm into his body and had his soul summarily granted power through it, then he'd definitely think Johnny was crazy. Even Johnny feels like he might be sort of crazy. Instead, he just quietly listens as Yuuta shares his sad story.
So Rika is her, but not really her - not anymore. He's alone. Again, if their roles were switched... he doesn't know if he'd be able to say goodbye to someone like that. (Or maybe he's being sentimental. Axl Ro would have killed him if he was so unable to let go...) ]
... You were really okay just letting her go like that? [ a beat. ] I mean -- I guess keeping her with you was bad for her. That ghost didn't look happy. Still...
[ was Rika lonely, too? Is she in Heaven now, or something? Johnny isn't sure he believes in things like that anymore. He pauses, awkwardly, not really knowing what to say. ]
Uh... I'm sorry. That that happened to you. You don't have to talk about it or anything.
( he can be a little dense and obtuse sometimes, but in this instance, it's not as though he's ignorant of how personal the information he's sharing is. it's not very difficult to say, especially since his closest friends back home had been there and present for much of the unfolding of it. that, and... he'd hidden himself away for so long, only in the presence of other people when it was socially expected or demanded of him, that he'd unwittingly starved himself of the simple pleasure of speaking to another person about things that you were going through. he likes to act like the events of last year are all behind him, that he's suddenly climbed on top of the mountain of grief that he wandered around the base of for all of those years after rika's death, but... it's more complicated than that. grief is not so much like an obstacle that one overcomes โ it's a lifelong process, and one that can get a great deal easier with time, but there will always be small things and certain times that cause it to become harder as well.
so there's something bizarrely liberating to talk about it, but he also doesn't think he can make any sense of what rika is unless he explains some of the reason why the cursed spirit existed in the first place.
he smiles, the expression worn and gentle with the familiarity that time grants him when thinking about this. he decides... not to tell johnny that he had nearly gone with her. if maki's hand wasn't there to fall on his shoulder and stop him, with toge and panda at her side, there to entreat him to stay... it's hard to say what he might have done, what he might be doing now. rika had told him not to come to her side too soon, and he's doing his best to follow that directive, but โ he's sure she was sad to be separated from him as well, wherever she is now. )
I guess I learned that... sometimes loving someone means letting them go.
( it's natural for the heart to want the opposite. it's a blind, instinctual thing, desperate for comfort and fearful of pain. he had been the same as a child... he just also had the power to keep her with him by force. what he'd done to her had been violent and controlling, even if he had done it unknowingly and out of love. so her love had similarly become violent and controlling; it had hurt countless people, even killed others. he carries that guilt, along with the guilt of having done that to her in the first place. regardless, now is about the time that he does get at least a little self-conscious and awkward about foisting so much on a new friend. he shifts his weight from one foot to another, fidgeting with the hem of his shirt with one of his hands. ) No, I'm sorry... It's not really an easy or pleasant story to hear, I know. It's just kind of hard explaining what "Rika" is without explaining where she came from.
Regardless, Johnny... I'm glad that you talked to me about this. Um, I'll be sure not to tell anyone about it. ( since he'd been so cloak and daggers about telling him, he has to assume he'd want to keep it down-low as much as possible...? )
( the nagging feeling of a message having been sent his way via Communion arrives when yuuta is in the middle of a meal; he has to scramble for a moment before pulling his shard out from his shirt, nearly dropping a piece of dried fruit for his trouble. )
Ernesto, hi!
( there's a pensive buzz as he thinks it over, but there doesn't seem to be any consternation stemming from conflicting plans. ) Umm, sure. I didn't have anything in particular I needed to do today. Want to give it a try now?
[ A real shame these shards are as inconvenient as they are, huh? Though without any clue that he almost ruined Yuuta's meal, he doesn't realize he has anything to apologize for.
There's some hesitation on Ernesto's part for a moment, unsure if it's a good idea for him to leave when things are a mess... but at the same time, keeping his head down isn't a bad idea either. If they don't get far then maybe...? ]
We certainly could, though we might want to start with some locations outside of Greentruth rather than jumping right to the shrines in that case. If we don't disrupt the wildlife too much though, the forest should be a pretty good place to try it out.
( with yuuta spending most of his time in greentruth and the surrounding forest, only foraying into godsblood when he needed supplies or felt restless or had a wild hair... he's out of the loop. if he can sense any of the prevailing edges of worry from ernesto, he has no context for them. there's a flutter of vague uncertainty from the young man, but more than that, there's the ironclad desire to try to help however he can. )
Yeah, that works! And we won't need to worry about the wildlife. They should be able to pass through, no problem โ curtains are usually only effective on people and cursed spirits.
[ Huh... only effective on people? That sounds like something they might have to investigate then. While every Aion Ernesto has met looks like a person to him, different world rules might change things up a bit if Yuuta's curtain doesn't work on all living creatures.
Something to worry about after they figure out the maximum scale of it. ]
Sounds good. I've got a few things I should probably wrap up here myself before heading over, so expect me in about an hour.
( they would have to see. he would assume it would work on all Aions โ though they might not be aware of it, or have any way of using it, he gets the sense that all of them still have cursed energy. it was just a byproduct of being alive, of feeling such emotions such as guilt, sorrow, anger, fear, betrayal, and rejection. curtains affected sapient creatures and cursed spirits because the former gave rise to cursed energy and held it within them and the latter were physically comprised of it.
they'll just have to test it out. do dogboys from another universe have cursed energy and just not know it...? science will show. )
Alright! ( that gives him time to finish eating and straighten himself up a bit. ) I'll see you then.
( and, indeed, yuuta is a punctual young man. by the time ernesto passes through the portal and into greentruth, yuuta is there to greet him. the sword that ernesto had bought for him โ a single-edged falchion โ he wears in its sheath, slung over one shoulder. he greets the perro with a bright smile. )
[ Ernesto certainly does his best to put up the facade of someone who wouldn't have much cursed energy given the emotions that are required to give it off, but he should have plenty of it, and that should mean that when he tries to walk through Yuuta's curtain he bangs his nose right on the barrier.
Or however this thing is going to work. There are a lot of questions to ask Yuuta about his curtain as they work on it.
He smiles easily at Yuuta, somehow not entirely surprised that Yuuta is already there and waiting for him, and raises one hand in an easy wave. ]
Ahaha, thanks.
[ It feels weird to get a welcome like that, but this is their base of operations, so maybe it makes sense? Even if Ernesto is just an occasional visitor dropping by. ]
So lets get trekking into the woods if you're ready. You have any routes you prefer to travel?
[ Figuring that Yuuta is more familiar with the surrounding area than he is. ]
( usually he prefers to run and jump along the tree boughs like some sort of fucked-up parkour monkey, but... he doesn't think that's going to work with ernesto in tow. not unless he's okay with being tossed over one shoulder or carried under yuuta's arm (which wouldn't necessarily be a new addition to their friendship), but... it didn't really seem a polite way to go wandering off into the woods with someone.
ground routes... okay, yes, he can figure those out. )
If we go down the bridges from here, ( he points, ) it will be the quickest way to the ground. From there, there's a game trail I follow sometimes when I'm going to the river. That's probably the easiest path through the undergrowth, though we'll have to keep an eye out for any wildlife. ( not that he thinks that would be much of a problem, but he prefers leave them be as much as humanly possible. )
[ Though it seems more tiring that just walking around on the ground like normal land-bound creatures, Ernesto's not exactly bad at the whole parkour himself. He could probably keep up as long as Yuuta didn't really work to outpace him.
But without Yuuta bringing up his preferred methods, the two will sadly never know about the treetop adventures they could have had.
Ernesto nods thoughtfully though as he follows Yuuta's gesture. ]
We'll talk quietly and try not to make much noise. The river might not be a bad place to start testing things out too.
( well, yuuta's idea of "parkour" incorporates the assumption that he can jump both horizontally and vertically much further than a typical human might be able to, when he reinforces himself with cursed energy... he just figured it was a much safer bet to take the more pedestrian route.
it's not like they're really in a hurry either way. yuuta smiles broadly, nods, and leads the way, across the bridges made of broad tree branches and haphazardly strung between trees, leading ever-downwards until they reach the ground. from there it's easy enough to find the narrow game trail cut through the undergrowth. fortunately enough, they don't seem to be intersecting with any moving herds of dinosaurs today. yuuta chatters with smalltalk up until the point where he can begin to hear the sound of running water, then he asks, )
Um... What exactly are you interested in learning about the curtains? Is there a specific one you want me to try first?
[ As good as Ernesto usually is at small talk, it's probably obvious partway into this conversation that he's somewhat distracted. A lot happened in pretty rapid succession, and his mind is trying to split its attention as he plots out the next step they should all be taking even in the middle of working through one of them.
He still seems a little surprised when Yuuta finally gets to business though, and hums as he tries to decide what the most important thing to start with is. ]
I guess we're looking to see what area we can still effectively cover, huh? You said it could keep people in or out? Might not be a bad idea to work on expanding it a bit at a time, and I can try my luck at leaving, then let it down, so I can try entering it after that.
( and yuuta, naturally a thoughtful sort of guy, picks up on it as they go along. he isn't a person that needs to fill every waking moment he spends with someone else with conversation. quite the contrary, he tends to benefit most from friends that carry a lot of that burden for him so he can enjoy the ride and contribute when he feels he should. but if ernesto seems to have a lot on his mind, he leaves him to think on it, instead applying his attention to the jungle around them. it's become more familiar to him over the last few months (astonishing, considering how much of a city boy he was based on his upbringing), but it's still a beast ready to bare its fangs at any moment.
the river is one of the few places where the sunlight filters more directly through the thick canopy, having been opened up by the water snaking its way downgrade on the forest floor below. he likes spending time here. there are plenty of perches around that he likes to stake out in, watching all the bizarre animals that call this place home approach to drink.
they seem relatively alone for the time being, which means nothing at all, except perhaps their wild company knows better than to draw attention to themselves. but he thinks it should be fine.
he jumps up onto a large, flat stone near the river's bank, one elevating him perhaps a few feet off the ground. he glances around, judging the space. size isn't really a factor he's put too much thought into for curtains. he typically uses them as a component of a domain expansion โ those, in contrast to curtains that windows usually put up, are fairly small.
he doesn't want to push himself too much too soon and have the thing collapse immediately. so he visualizes a curtain that will enshroud them and a section of the river, perhaps a hundred feet in diameter. a decent size, but not as large as, say, the curtain that getou had dropped over his entire campus.
he takes a breath, and then he raises his right hand in a symbol: fore and middle fingers straight and pressed together along with a thumb, the rest curled to his palm. )
Emerge from the darkness, blacker than darkness. Purify that which is impure.
( and then the curtain begins to fall over them, starting as an amorphous spot in the sky fifty or so feet in the air that slowly crawls down towards the ground like tempered chocolate being poured over a dome. translucent and somewhat dark, it changes the atmosphere of the once-idyllic riverside, making the air gloomy and still.
he glances to ernesto. ) This one should try to keep everyone inside from leaving. Give it a try.
[ Curtain is an usual way to describe a barrier, and because of that Ernesto really had no idea what to expect when Yuuta first admitted that he could create them. The reality is much subtler than anything he was picturing, but that might not be a bad thing. It seems like if they need to trap some of the Kenoma inside of one, they could do it easily without it being noticed until it was too late.
That is assuming that this barrier is going to work like it's supposed to.
A small shiver runs down Ernesto's back at the sense of disquiet being inside Yuuta's barrier brings him, but he ignores it as he slowly starts to move forward, hand out in front of him, so that that can bump into whatever edge of this barrier exists so he doesn't run face first into an invisible wall. ]
Oh, um, around maybe a hundred feet across, maybe? I was thinking something large enough to cover one building.
( it's harder to tell walking towards it, but as ernesto gets closer, he will be able to find the border of the wall easily enough. it's just like they're insects trapped under a tinted glass bowl. there's a faint visual warping, like the world outside bowing strangely across the curved surface, that one can typically pick up on before they run straight into it.
when reached out to, there's not too much to say about how it feels. it just feels like a smooth, sturdy wall. but it doesn't necessarily give the impression of being indestructible. like a thick pane of glass, one might feel like they could shatter it if only they gave it a strong enough hit with the right weapon. )
Edited (i needed to clean my keyboard and it posted my tag for me) 2022-07-28 23:28 (UTC)
[ On one hand, knowing where the edges of Yuuta's barrier will help their allies know exactly where the limits are, but on the other hand it's kind of a shame they probably won't see any Kenoma smack comically into it as they charge at it.
Still, nice to know he won't also smack into it as he reaches out his hand, running it along the "wall" thoughtfully. It definitely doesn't give the impression of being that sturdy, but it is nice that it's doing its job of keeping him in.
He calls back to Yuuta as he stays standing by the curtain's edge. ]
( if they're going fast enough, it might be possible that they could smack into it...
the question seems odd to yuuta. )
Huh?
( he jogs from where he was standing near the river, arriving to stand alongside ernesto. he reaches out to place his hand on the surface of the curtain, even going so far as to tap it. his face screws up with confusion. )
Well... That's kind of new. I mean, there are a few methods of taking down a curtain โ knocking out the sorcerer that's casting it is the main one, though sometimes you can disrupt it by breaking its rules. Like, say if I made a really restrictive barrier to keep just you in, but then someone else rammed their way through from the outside. In instances like that, they can pop like a bubble...
But this, um... Honestly, I don't really know. ( a pause... ) Do you wanna try - hitting it?
[ Ernesto considers that for a second, his hand drifting to the hilt of his sword, and his fingers tapping along it. Truth be told... ]
I don't really want to mess up my sword on a magical barrier, though I wonder...
[ He looks down at the ground around them, walking a few paces before he picks up a pretty decent sized rock, and tosses it up into the air for a second, catching it a second later to check its heft. ]
This only works on people, right? So if I were to chuck this at the wall would it smash into it because I threw it, or would it go right through?
( this is going a bit beyond the specifications that the canon gives me for how curtains work, so this will simply have to be my best on making sense of how it works... )
Ah. Yeah. There's a chance it could damage it.
( there's a reason why yuuta typically reinforces not only his body but his sword as well โ it prevents it from chipping or snapping when using it against things that... swords probably shouldn't be used against. like concrete, cars, reinforced bodies of other sorcerers...
he looks at the rock, and he has to really think about it. )
I think it... depends. It might go off of intent. Like - if you're just throwing the rock to see how far it goes, it might go through. But if you're throwing it with the intent of trying to damage the barrier, it'll probably absorb the "attack"... if that makes sense.
[ Working off of intent, huh? That's an interesting way for this to work, and that could make this trickier too, because now his question is less about intent and more... ]
If that's the case, then what about if we're not aiming at the barrier itself...
[ He looks at a tree that's a little distance past it, closing one eye as he tries to take good aim. ]
But aiming at something on the other side of it?
[ And with that question ask he lobs the rock as hard as he can with the full intention of hitting the tree.
It's not a person, so who is to say if it'll work? Might be nice to know beforehand before they're trying to ward off an attack, and people are firing arrows at them. ]
voice... 4 now
... Yuuta? Can you hear me? This is Johnny.
no subject
johnny's message is the first time anyone's contacted him directly. the odd nagging feeling that someone's trying to get a hold of him is bizarre and more than a little bit anxiety-inducing for a moment, but once he figures out it's coming from his shard and has to do with Communion, he calms down quite a bit so he can answer. )
Oh! Hi, Johnny. It's nice to hear from you! Have you been doing alright since I saw you last?
( considering everything that had happened in venera... he's more than a little bit concerned, even if he seemed to have avoided the worst of it himself. )
no subject
I wanted to talk to you again.
no subject
Is there a place you'd like to meet up?
no subject
Johnny doesn't miss that Yuuta sounds oddly... happy? to receive this "call," if it can be called that, but he doesn't comment on that. Maybe he wasn't just taking pity on Johnny, after all. ]
I'm at the south end of the market - the main one. I don't think you'll have a hard time spotting me.
[ they can figure out where to go after that; he'd like to avoid rolling over as many rickety rope bridges as possible. It still stresses him out every time. ]
no subject
well... he doesn't want to just dwell on feeling remiss about something that's already passed. this is a great opportunity to turn that around. )
( it really hadn't been that long, but, still. ) What's up?
no subject
he is indeed in his wheelchair, which is exactly why he said he'd stand out; in terms of appearance, he's not quite as bold as he used to be, having no choice but to wear the local fashions.
no subject
so he tries his best. it's not that he is without his doubts and misgivings, but he always has to try to put them into perspective. fortunately enough for johnny, just being a little sharp-tongued isn't enough to raise many flags for him โ he had, after all, been a classmate of zen'in maki. compared to her, he's downright pleasant.
he is happy to see johnny looking a little less out-of-sorts, and that shines through his greeting with a small amount of relief. ) Oh?
What is it? ( he's inspecting johnny like a kid trying to find a birthday present hidden in a pocket. )
no subject
no subject
he tries not to look disappointed at johnny's admission, but it shows through just a little bit. ) Ah...
So I wanted to talk to you instead.
no subject
O - Oh. I see. ( kind of a weird thing to call something like that, but... it's at least a bit easier to say than the terminology that sorcerers usually use? when he'd first gone to jujutsu tech, rika's full classification had been "special grade vengeful cursed spirit orimoto rika"...
he makes an obvious start as johnny continues. ) What?
( he's actually interrupted by a dark rift opening up in the air behind him; the large, pale head of the cursed apparition appears from it and leans forward to rest her chin on his right shoulder. he jumps, but then chuckles, reaching up to pat the side of her head. despite having no eyes, the creature's gaze seems to bore into johnny and tusk with aggressive intensity. )
This... is Rika.
no subject
] So... I guess this makes us allies.
no subject
There's only so much I can do to calm her down...
no subject
[ it's obvious he hasn't had many. ]
no subject
It's only making all of this tougher for us, if we don't.
no subject
Yeah, I guess. [ he doesn't really know who to trust or how much the Pleroma can actually help him - he's never been much of a team player. But he does feel like he can trust Yuuta, at least. ] Don't get too nice and let people take advantage of you. We might all be on the same side, but we still barely know anything about anyone. Especially "Pleroma."
[ a beat. ]
... Although it looks like your "Rika" would beat up anyone who tried anything.
[ she seemed like she'd been ready to beat up Johnny a second ago, after all. ]
no subject
yuuta seems to accept johnny's advice, but he does so with obvious conflict written on his face. it's not that he's unaware of situations like these. he had been a ready tool of the jujustu society, both because it was expected as him as a student of their school but also because, as special grade, it meant there were things only someone like he could do. but as his teacher had told him, its higher-ups were overly conservative and reactionary โ the same old men that would've had him executed due to the curse that he bore a little over a year ago now ironically relied on him to carry out their judgments. gojou, as uncontrollable as he was due to his power, had been a rogue element to them, and he had passed that nature and that wariness on to his student. don't always trust those in power, especially those that have had it for a long time. they will rarely do what is in your best interest.
it feels different, somehow. it's not as though the sorcerers' struggle against curse users and cursed spirits wasn't important โ at the time that he'd been taken from his world, it had reached a point where it might result in a global extermination of all mundane, non-sorcerer people. they fought for similarly dire reasons here, but... they had so little information, so few resources, such scant direction. it makes him want to trust who they do have, but...
johnny is right. doing so would just open them up to risk. )
I've always got someone watching my back.
no subject
[ good try ]
no subject
( the plot thickens. )
no subject
his nerves are apparent, and Johnny doesn't really grasp why, outside of plain old humility.
no subject
but when it comes to this particular topic, he's a little more particular about the details, just because of how close they are to his heart. while it seems there are many similarities between what "Stands" are and what rika is... johnny's confusion here gives yuuta the impression that they definitely aren't the same thing. because, as a cursed spirit, rika hadn't been unique โ there have always been vengeful cursed spirits throughout japanese history, those whose grudges had caused them to persist after their mortal deaths, with yuuta's (very distant, very vague) ancestor being one of the most well-known.
he blinks, tilts his head a degree or two to one side, and replies slowly, ) Well, yeah... Before that, she was just my friend. ( okay, that description is a little toothless. yuuta isn't a coward. ) She was - the girl I was going to marry one day.
no subject
He is feeling that.) ]
no subject
sometimes it hurts him to think about, but he had known her longer as a cursed spirit than he had as a human being. in all that time, he had stopped finding her frightening and monstrous as he had in the beginning. regardless of how she looked or how viciously she acted, it had always been in defense of him, out of her protective love for him. he'd loved her too, despite it all or perhaps because of it. sometimes he had selfish moments where he wishes they could have had more time like that together, but โ no. it had been right to undo her curse as soon as he realized he was the one that had put it on her in the first place.
he hadn't told johnny this wanting to shame him, or tell him off, or make him feel bad. at first he speaks on embarrassed reflex, scratching at the back of his head, ) Fiancee...
( he shrugs. he isn't sure, and it's a perfect mystery to the other sorcerers at the jujutsu society as well. )
no subject
You don't have to talk about it or anything.
no subject
so there's something bizarrely liberating to talk about it, but he also doesn't think he can make any sense of what rika is unless he explains some of the reason why the cursed spirit existed in the first place.
he smiles, the expression worn and gentle with the familiarity that time grants him when thinking about this. he decides... not to tell johnny that he had nearly gone with her. if maki's hand wasn't there to fall on his shoulder and stop him, with toge and panda at her side, there to entreat him to stay... it's hard to say what he might have done, what he might be doing now. rika had told him not to come to her side too soon, and he's doing his best to follow that directive, but โ he's sure she was sad to be separated from him as well, wherever she is now.
( since he'd been so cloak and daggers about telling him, he has to assume he'd want to keep it down-low as much as possible...? )
voice.
[ The timeline might need to be moved up sooner than Ernesto was expecting, and he's personally sorry about that one... ]
no subject
Ernesto, hi!
( there's a pensive buzz as he thinks it over, but there doesn't seem to be any consternation stemming from conflicting plans. ) Umm, sure. I didn't have anything in particular I needed to do today. Want to give it a try now?
no subject
There's some hesitation on Ernesto's part for a moment, unsure if it's a good idea for him to leave when things are a mess... but at the same time, keeping his head down isn't a bad idea either. If they don't get far then maybe...? ]
We certainly could, though we might want to start with some locations outside of Greentruth rather than jumping right to the shrines in that case. If we don't disrupt the wildlife too much though, the forest should be a pretty good place to try it out.
no subject
Yeah, that works! And we won't need to worry about the wildlife. They should be able to pass through, no problem โ curtains are usually only effective on people and cursed spirits.
( ie. entities with cursed energy. )
I'll get ready and meet you at the portal, then?
no subject
Something to worry about after they figure out the maximum scale of it. ]
Sounds good. I've got a few things I should probably wrap up here myself before heading over, so expect me in about an hour.
no subject
they'll just have to test it out. do dogboys from another universe have cursed energy and just not know it...? science will show. )
Alright! ( that gives him time to finish eating and straighten himself up a bit. ) I'll see you then.
( and, indeed, yuuta is a punctual young man. by the time ernesto passes through the portal and into greentruth, yuuta is there to greet him. the sword that ernesto had bought for him โ a single-edged falchion โ he wears in its sheath, slung over one shoulder. he greets the perro with a bright smile. )
Welcome back.
no subject
no subject
( not that he thinks that would be much of a problem, but he prefers leave them be as much as humanly possible. )
no subject
But without Yuuta bringing up his preferred methods, the two will sadly never know about the treetop adventures they could have had.
Ernesto nods thoughtfully though as he follows Yuuta's gesture. ]
We'll talk quietly and try not to make much noise. The river might not be a bad place to start testing things out too.
no subject
it's not like they're really in a hurry either way. yuuta smiles broadly, nods, and leads the way, across the bridges made of broad tree branches and haphazardly strung between trees, leading ever-downwards until they reach the ground. from there it's easy enough to find the narrow game trail cut through the undergrowth. fortunately enough, they don't seem to be intersecting with any moving herds of dinosaurs today. yuuta chatters with smalltalk up until the point where he can begin to hear the sound of running water, then he asks, )
Um... What exactly are you interested in learning about the curtains? Is there a specific one you want me to try first?
no subject
He still seems a little surprised when Yuuta finally gets to business though, and hums as he tries to decide what the most important thing to start with is. ]
I guess we're looking to see what area we can still effectively cover, huh? You said it could keep people in or out? Might not be a bad idea to work on expanding it a bit at a time, and I can try my luck at leaving, then let it down, so I can try entering it after that.
no subject
the river is one of the few places where the sunlight filters more directly through the thick canopy, having been opened up by the water snaking its way downgrade on the forest floor below. he likes spending time here. there are plenty of perches around that he likes to stake out in, watching all the bizarre animals that call this place home approach to drink.
they seem relatively alone for the time being, which means nothing at all, except perhaps their wild company knows better than to draw attention to themselves. but he thinks it should be fine.
he jumps up onto a large, flat stone near the river's bank, one elevating him perhaps a few feet off the ground. he glances around, judging the space. size isn't really a factor he's put too much thought into for curtains. he typically uses them as a component of a domain expansion โ those, in contrast to curtains that windows usually put up, are fairly small.
he doesn't want to push himself too much too soon and have the thing collapse immediately. so he visualizes a curtain that will enshroud them and a section of the river, perhaps a hundred feet in diameter. a decent size, but not as large as, say, the curtain that getou had dropped over his entire campus.
he takes a breath, and then he raises his right hand in a symbol: fore and middle fingers straight and pressed together along with a thumb, the rest curled to his palm.
Give it a try.
no subject
That is assuming that this barrier is going to work like it's supposed to.
A small shiver runs down Ernesto's back at the sense of disquiet being inside Yuuta's barrier brings him, but he ignores it as he slowly starts to move forward, hand out in front of him, so that that can bump into whatever edge of this barrier exists so he doesn't run face first into an invisible wall. ]
How far out did you make this one?
no subject
( it's harder to tell walking towards it, but as ernesto gets closer, he will be able to find the border of the wall easily enough. it's just like they're insects trapped under a tinted glass bowl. there's a faint visual warping, like the world outside bowing strangely across the curved surface, that one can typically pick up on before they run straight into it.
when reached out to, there's not too much to say about how it feels. it just feels like a smooth, sturdy wall. but it doesn't necessarily give the impression of being indestructible. like a thick pane of glass, one might feel like they could shatter it if only they gave it a strong enough hit with the right weapon. )
no subject
Still, nice to know he won't also smack into it as he reaches out his hand, running it along the "wall" thoughtfully. It definitely doesn't give the impression of being that sturdy, but it is nice that it's doing its job of keeping him in.
He calls back to Yuuta as he stays standing by the curtain's edge. ]
How much of a beating can this take?
no subject
the question seems odd to yuuta. )
( a pause... ) Do you wanna try - hitting it?
no subject
[ Ernesto considers that for a second, his hand drifting to the hilt of his sword, and his fingers tapping along it. Truth be told... ]
I don't really want to mess up my sword on a magical barrier, though I wonder...
[ He looks down at the ground around them, walking a few paces before he picks up a pretty decent sized rock, and tosses it up into the air for a second, catching it a second later to check its heft. ]
This only works on people, right? So if I were to chuck this at the wall would it smash into it because I threw it, or would it go right through?
no subject
Ah.
But if you're throwing it with the intent of trying to damage the barrier, it'll probably absorb the "attack"... if that makes sense.
sorry about that!
